Green Marbleized Last Supper Scene

‘’I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni
History

The above famous quote attributed to Michelangelo, truly encapsulates our feeling regarding statuary. Mankind has been intrigued with creating carvings of important people and events for centuries. It tells a story about who we are and where we came from. Statuary can serve as an aid to people’s prayer, and as a thought provoking reminder of the heroes and figures that came before us. The Löwenmensch figurine from the Alps in southern Germany is one of the oldest known statues in the world, and is arguably tens of thousands of years old. Egyptian statues of kings and deities have existed since the Old Egyptian kingdoms. The oldest statues in Rome are statue of Ceres, which was made in bronze, and Diana.

From History to Today

While the creation of quality statuary had its roots in stone, wood and primitive metals, it has grown to include many other mediums. Heritage has the resources and the expertise to carve and cast statuary in both traditional and modern materials. Dependent upon the needs of our clients, these pieces are either created in-house or imported from our global network of suppliers. "Structure, Beauty and Emotion are all possible through a painting” Michael H. Berlinger
Oil On Canvas History

Oil painting, at its roots, uses a purified linseed oil base. Various colorants are mixed with turpentine and accelerants to create the well known colors and brands that are common today. While oil paints are often associated with the works the great Renaissance artists, the use of oil as a fluid medium can be traced back to the time of the early Roman Empire.

Oil Paints

Painting with oil colors gives the artist a brilliant level of detail and depth. While Heritage Restoration's artists have experience working with acrylics and other paint bases, we feel that oils give us the most freedom to create beautiful works of art. From a technical viewpoint, the outstanding ease with which the fusion of tones, satisfactory linear treatments, and crisp effects are obtained make oils unique among fluid painting mediums. Opaque, transparent, and translucent painting all lie within oil’s range, and it is unsurpassed for textural variation. All of these wonderful attributes are worked into Heritage's new works of art, as well as our recreations.

Canvas

Currently canvas is made of a cotton blend, instead of traditional linen. This was done to help decrease the cost of its base materials; however, it is still possible to create works of art on the original canvases. Depending on the application, Heritage will stretch the canvas on a stretcher frame and prepare it to accept paint. If the canvas is to be applied to a wall or ceiling, it will be stretched using different methods. It is critical that the canvas is treated properly from the beginning, so as to avoid harmful elements (such as acids) degrading the integrity of the painting structure.

A unique offering from Heritage Restoration is the ability to paint on wood in a style consistant with the masters of the past. Proper back priming and bonding is guaranteed. Wood backed oil paintings tend to grow quicker in value than canvas counterparts.

The artists employed at Heritage Restoration and Design paint beautiful replicas of the original masters works. We also have the capability to create high quality new artworks per our clients' requests.

We also supply framing!

Running trim for a building construction project
Millwork for Commercial, Residential and Historic Projects

Heritage Restoration and Design, established in 1820, has earned a respected reputation for the manufacturing and distribution of fine quality millwork including wood moldings, historic millwork replication, picture frames, railings and balusters, capitals and columns as well as many other items. We work primarily in solid and engineered woods, resin extrusions and castings. Our millwork products can be used both in indoor and outdoor settings, depending on the project parameters and materials chosen.

Basic Materials Options

Presently, individual project needs and requirements are varied. It is common that exotic wood species will be required to achieve the desired end result. Heritage has suppliers across the United States and source virtually any wood or engineered material necessary. Depending on the scope and scale of your project, we may stock your material.

Wood species that we commonly use:

  • Red Oak - Plain Sawn, Rift and Quartered
  • White Oak - Plain Sawn, Rift and Quartered
  • Poplar - Various Cuts and Clarity
  • Hard Maple

Over the years we have compiled a vast library of our own custom profiles, in addition to the huge collection of molding profiles that we have access to through our many suppliers. If you are looking for a particular style of molding, we can make it, find it, or we already have it.

Carvings, Turnings, and Specialized Wood Working

We take great pride in our carving and turnings capabilities. In the world of quality architectural millwork, it is common that components will need to have a carved element beyond that of a running profile. Perhaps a client desires to have their company logo carved into a wainscot system, or carved figurines and scenes are required to ornament a frieze. For more information, please see our specialties section where we talk more about our 3D Scanning & CNC.

Heritage offers a wealth of products and experience in the world of architectural millworking.
