In Depth
As a one-off project, a series of chess boards were to be built. These elevated playing sets would contain detailed carvings, and a large hollow space underneath the board to store the pieces. Each piece of carved on our CNC machines. Once the test samples were approved, the production run began. After the carving was completed, each board was hand assembled.
Finishing multicolored surfaces can always be a bit of a challenge. Our staff hand died each square to create the checkered pattern. The various board bases recieved one of two colors, a deep brown or a light tan. The playing pieces were also colored to match the squares on the board. Each outline was hand traced in black to stand out.
This project was a joy to put together, as it is not often that we take a break from larger furiture and interior projects to work on pieces like these! Check out the gallery below to see some images of the manufacturing process.
