Rebuilding George Washington

Project Overview

Heritage repairs and refinishes a shattered bust of the founding father of the United States, George Washington. Each of the broken parts was carefully reassembled to form a complete whole.

The plaster bust had been damaged in an accident. Half of Washington’s face, his nose, and left eye had fragmented into two dozen pieces. Heritage’s staff painstakingly reassembled the broken components and used sealing compounds to fill the cracks. After sufficient drying time, the excess compounds were sanded away, leaving a smooth surface on the newly assembled face. The bust was primed and painted to ensure that its color remained uniform.

George Washington was now fully restored and ready to return to its place of origin.
